Bon Voyage Breakfast – A Wonderful Family Experience

On our recent trip to Walt Disney World, my family and I were lucky to snag a breakfast reservation on our last morning for the Bon Voyage Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno in the BoardWalk Inn area.  Since we were staying at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn and Villas, it was a quick walk downstairs to arrive for our adventure.

Trattoria al Forno is located in between Abracadabar and Boardwalk Bakery.  They do have a breakfast service that is not a character meal, if you prefer.  Reservations are not required for that section, but if you’re wanting the full Bon Voyage Breakfast experience, I highly recommend making your reservation 180 days before your trip.

Next we were offered a selection of pastries, presented in a frying pan.  It was a very cute callback to Tangled!  The sun logo was flaky like a croissant, with a taste of honey.  It was definitely my favorite, but the rest of them were delicious as well.  We were served individual bowls of mixed fruit salad, each with a tiny sabre sword reminiscent of Prince Eric’s in The Little Mermaid.  This was a huge hit with Gibbs, and he carried it around the rest of the day.

On the table was a Travel Journal with spaces for us to record information about our trip.  It was a fun family activity while we waited for our first course to arrive.  There was also an autograph card bearing the signatures of Ariel, Rapunzel, Flynn Rider and Prince Eric. It should be noted that information has been released that characters at table service restaurants will no longer sign autograph books, in an attempt to streamline and shorten the cycle of character visits.  This was not our experience; the characters we met were all happy to sign Gibbs’ autograph book when asked.  However, none of the restaurants we visited were busy.  It is possible that the new policy will be enforced during busier times, and autograph cards will be handed out instead.

I have a policy that I try at least one food item that I am not sure I will like on every trip to Walt Disney World.  On this trip, I decided to order Two-Eggs Poached Underwater which is: House-made Fennel Sausage, Sunday Gravy, and Parmesan Cheese over Golden Polenta with Toasted Focaccia.  The “Sunday Gravy” is a tomato sauce similar to a marinara that was truly delicious, and the sausage had an excellent Italian flavor.  My husband ordered the Royale Breakfast which was steak, eggs and potatoes – it was gone so fast I didn’t even get a photo!  Gibbs had Flounder’s Flapjacks – big, thick, fluffy pancakes that he gobbled up immediately.

Then came the characters!  They were such fun.  We met Flynn Rider first, and he charmed my son by saying he had “definite smolder potential.” Gibbs, ever the sucker for princesses, flirted shyly with Rapunzel and Ariel, who were both delightful.  At the end of our meal, we walked out through the foyer of Flying Fish and met with Prince Eric.  Since the princes represented here are not readily available for other Meet and Greets, it’s a good fit for young ones interested in meeting them.

Trattoria al Forno is a menu-driven establishment rather than a buffet, so each person can choose their own meal.  Pastries and fruit are included with each meal, for one set price.  Breakfast is served from [7:30]AM – [11:00] AM according to the Walt Disney World website as of September, 2017.  If you’re on the Disney Dining Plan, it’s a one-credit meal.  I highly recommend this experience for any family.  The food is unique and interesting, without being so foreign that picky eaters will be turned off.  I’ve never had another meal like it in Walk Disney World but after trying it, we will definitely be going back.
